rein1, s. Srian m (capaill). To hold the reins, an srian a choinneáil. To give s.o. a free rein. srian, scód, a ligean le duine. To give a horse the reins, a cheann a ligean le capall. To give rein to one's anger, do racht a ligean amach. To draw rein, (i) srian a theannadh; srianadh; tabhairt ar do chapall seasamh; (ii) srian a chur le (costas, etc.); (iii) éirí as (iarracht). To keep a tight rein on, over, s.o., srian, smacht, a choinneáil ar dhuine. To drop the reins, éirí as, tabhairt suas.
rein2, v.tr. To rein in a horse, capall a shrianadh. Abs.To rein in, srianadh; srian a theannadh. To rein s.o. in, srian a chur le duine; duine a smachtú. To rein up a horse, tabhairt ar chapall seasamh (le teannadh an tsriain).
